See what your colleagues are saying about First Responder Grants

On behalf of the Stickney Fire Department and the Village of Stickney I would like to sincerely thank you. With your guidance, we have successfully received grants in the 2015 AFG and 2016 AFG grant cycles. I am keeping my fingers crossed that with your assistance we will be successful in the upcoming 2017 AFG grant cycle. I look forward to working with you in this grant cycle.

Thank you again.

I attended your 2016 grants workshop in Massachusetts, and it has paid huge dividends for our company and our clients.

Following your workshop, I wrote 3 First Responder grants for 2 small communities in New Jersey: an AFG for new SCBA equipment; a SAFER Hiring application; and a SAFER Volunteer Recruitment application. All 3 have now been approved and fully funded... just shy of $1 million!

Your course was filled with so much valuable, actionable information. What I learned in my two days with you made a real impact on the applications I submitted. In fact, when I compare these recent successful applications with ones I’ve done in the past that were not funded, the differences are clear.

Thanks for sharing your knowledge. The success we’ve had since taking your course has been well worth the nominal cost.

I bought the online grant training this year and was awarded on AFG Round 10 for $150,000 on a Vehicle Acquisition grant. We will now be able to replace our worn-out brush truck. This was a major win for our small community. I truly believe the online class helped me win this award!

Just to keep you updated on the success your training program has had, we got awarded a micro-grant earlier this year for new nozzles, and we received the 1199a for $110,000 towards a new brush truck. We're 2 for 2 in the 2016 AFG period. This makes 6 AFG awards and 2 SAFER awards since 2011.

Additionally, I helped another nearby department achieve a $691,000 SAFER award.

This would not have been possible without your course.

I want to thank you for giving me the tools to bring in around $1.5 million for my own department and a neighboring department. These departments both serve 10,000 people, so department size is no excuse not to get awarded. I do not know of any other training programs out there than can turn a $450 investment into over $1 million in return.

The class has been a huge help! We have increased our efforts towards seeking and applying for grants significantly. GrantFinder is helping us out a lot as well. Thanks for all your efforts and for holding the class! It has shown to be invaluable so far!

On the very day I finished your class last year, I went to my office and re-tooled my grant application for Firehouse Subs Foundation (the first grant I had applied for in this new job) based on what I had learned. I know those changes made a difference in our winning that grant for almost $20,000.

I also used your tips and techniques when applying for the COPS Hiring Grant. Thankfully we were awarded $1,250,000 to hire 10 new law enforcement officers. The CD I purchased was most helpful.

There have been additional successes since that class, but those two are most memorable to me. Thank you again for the class.

I write grants for many different departments in our college, but I needed specific guidance for public safety grants. This online training was a very comprehensive training that helped me prepare for several grants I am currently working on for our college’s new Public Safety Facility. Thank you so much for the opportunity to take the Online Public Safety Grant Writing training. This course was so comprehensive that I keep my notes from the course available as a quick reference for any grant. Not only was the online training helpful, but the staff at First Responders Grants has also been exceptionally professional and helpful. It's rare to find an organization that provides both professionalism and personal attention. I would recommend this course to anyone writing public safety grants.

Our department was awarded its first grant in 2003. I was tasked with taking over the responsibility of writing grants in 2005 and luckily was awarded in the first round. My next grant came late in 2008 after several rejections between the two. I had spoken with Kurt a few times informally but decided to take his Charlotte, NC class in 2009. After taking his class and totally rethinking the way I was writing grants, I was awarded a 3000 gallon tanker in round 1 of the 2009 grants and a brush/quick attack apparatus late in the 2010 awards for my department.

After the format change I went through several rejections in Ops, Fire Prevention and one S.A.F.E.R. grant until I received a partial grant in 2012. I was turned down again in 2013 and 2014. I had wanted to get back to Kurt's class, but none were offered within several hundred miles. I had been considering the online class and after a brief discussion with my Fire Chief and Mayor I was all set to go.

The online class took me about four hours to complete and was in a very easy to understand and follow format. The class was an excellent refresher for me from the two day class I had attended a few years ago and I picked up on quite a few new ideas as well as saw a couple areas that I feel were causing my turndown notices.

As I begin to prepare and submit this year's application in the coming days, I will be referring back to the online class section by section to make sure I am following what I learned to give our department the best possible chance of an award this year.

Kurt is very knowledgeable and highly respected in the grant writing community and has always responded to my questions, emails and phone calls very quickly. I highly recommend attending this online class whether you are a first time grant writer or like I was, needing to freshen up on the grant process.

Just wanted to let you know how much I appreciate your class and the quality of it. It was definitely a great investment. I took the class just over a year ago with Mr. Bradley in Marana, AZ. Since then I have only written a few grants, but I have still managed to secure over $1,000,000 in grant monies for my department. I still have not had a grant fully turned down for funding yet. For the price of your class, that's over a 2,500% return on our investment in just one year. Can't even do that in the stock market (especially in this economy). Keep up the good work!

I've known Kurt in the grant area since 2003. Kurt was the driving force that allowed me to receive our first Assistance to Firefighters Grant, and throughout the years, and over a million dollars in grant money later, he has been an amazing resource for grant training and consulting. As a recent student of Kurt's online course, it provided me with updated essential training in the comfort of my home. I would definitely recommend First Responder Grants as your grant resource.

I attended your Grant Writing for Public Safety course at Delta College in Michigan and was thrilled with the course and content. This summer I applied for a private foundation grant (National Emergency Medicine Association) to fund the purchase of law enforcement specific tactical trauma medical kits for our department. I'm thrilled to report that last month we were awarded nearly $10,000 to purchase 35 of the kits. I credit the success of my first professional grant writing effort to what I learned in your course.

I just wanted to send a little note of appreciation for all of your help in assisting the Northwood Fire Department obtain several AFG grants over the last few years. With your assistance, we have received probably well over $1,000,000 in funds to our region.

Thanks,

Just FYI we were awarded the grant for the new livescan fingerprint machine and KLER records management interface.

Figure you like to know when you successfully assist students. I know your company is always in need of business so whenever

I can work it into my schedule I will be attending some more training with you all.

Let's see what we are up to:

$321,999        ARRA Funding

$50,000           911 Grant

$14,000           Polaris Ranger

$23,000           KS JAG Funding

$1,200             Local Kiwanis Funding

That's $410,199, and we have about $4,000 invested in training and assistance through you... which works out to about $100,000 for every $1,000 invested.

THANKS FOR YOU HELP.

The Friendship Fire Company in Roaring Spring, Pennsylvania, was awarded an AFG grant in the amount of $150,286 to purchase 24 air packs. We would not been able to make this purchase without me taking your class and learning how to write grants. Thank you for all of your help!

I took Kurt's class in December of 2012 in Urbana, Illinois, as our operating budget was being crunched and continues to be under the microscope as most public safety budgets are today. Since taking the class I have been successful in obtaining grant funding from federal, state, and local programs. I can count on one hand how many grants we have been denied but need two hands to count how many grants we have been awarded.

Furthermore, the class is helpful in providing guidelines and tips for seeking smaller local grants and donations from area businesses and organizations. Our organization is quickly approaching the $200,000 mark in grant and donation dollars received since taking Kurt's class. While Kurt does not do the work for you in the class, he does give you a toolbox full of tools to put all the nuts and bolts of a grant application together. The class is nothing less than superior and you will not be disappointed. I HIGHLY recommend Kurt's class!

Recently, I had the opportunity to attend the Grant Writing Class offered by First Responder Grants. As a Deputy Sheriff in York, PA, I have had the chance to attend other classes on grant writing but none of them compared to this course. First Responder Grants is truly that—for first responders.

Other classes found me looking for ballistic vests while the people next to me were looking for a new roof on their church. First Responder Grants is catered to us, America’s first responders.

Thank you again for this great opportunity.

I've taken your seminar 3 times in the past in both Bushnell Basin and Victor, NY. Once again I've hit a grant, but this time it's for my new department and totaled $283,450 for 27 sets of TOG and 32 air paks. (They really like the new guy now.) Last year I was part of a team that won $450,000 for a new pumper for the New York State Fire Academy. I just wanted to say thanks for the help in the past. It is much appreciated.

I just wanted to thank Kurt Bradley with First Responder Grants for all of his help the past couple of years. We have been members of the Annual Grant Services Package for the last two years. In that time we have been awarded $25,000 from AFG, $4,000 from the Missouri Dept. of Conservation, $4,500 from Fireman’s Fund Insurance, and 2 Foundation grants totaling $56,000, for an Emergency Standby Generator and also for 8 AEDs and AED Instructor training. With the knowledge that I have obtained from Kurt Bradley I was also able to obtain a $16,600 grant from a local foundation and $1,000 from Wal-Mart for my local police department. Thanks again for all of your help Kurt.

I don't know where to begin to thank you for this class. I knew I had a lot to learn, but I had no idea how much. I walked away with vital information for my work with Sipesville Volunteer Fire Co., as well as important tips for all grants that I write. My husband was glad to have been included as he is my proof reader. He too came away with newfound information that will be crucial to my success for SVFC. Your energy, knowledge and experience are certainly a force to be reckoned with.

I began my personal career as an educator (I taught high school English and journalism) and vowed to never bore my students. Well, you most certainly have that ability to keep everyone engaged in your information. No one there was anything but paying attention to your every word. You have a gift and I thank you for sharing it with such an important group of community servants.

I remain humbled to be working with our local first responders and am learning more with every encounter. I will be meeting with their President soon and am anxious to share what I have learned with him. And now I am ready to get started on the 2015 AFG grant.

I want to take the time and say thank you very much. You were able to teach me how to write grants and be successful with them. I was recently appointed to Fire Chief of Calumet Park, IL. I was able to beat all the other candidates because I was the only one who writes grants. So once again, THANK YOU!

The Philipstown-North Highlands Fire District retained the services of First Responder Grants to assist us in applying for the Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program. Our department had no real experience in either applying for grants nor working knowledge of the program itself. Kurt Bradley contacted us and from the very beginning has been invaluable to us in not only preparing to apply to the program but, in helping us to develop a proper application to the program. We were especially impressed with his level of communication with us and keeping us informed at every step of this process.

We applied to the 2013 Assistance to Firefighters Grant and on July 25, 2014, we were awarded $110,675 to replace 21 sets of SCBA for our department. Needless to say, we attribute Kurt's expertise and experience as being largely responsible for our success with this project. We would highly recommend him and First Responder Grants to any department seeking to become more adept and successful at receiving grants for their department. The cost for a year's worth of services from his company was extremely reasonable, especially in light of the return on investment that we have received.

The Northwood Fire Department has been contracting with Kurt Bradley and First Responder Grants for 2 years. The money paid for the Annual Grant Services Package subscription fee has been more than worth it.

In our 2-year relationship, Kurt has shared with us his incredible wealth of knowledge and experience in working through the Assistance to Firefighter Grants. Using his service in the last two years, our department has been part of two successful Regional Communications grants. These grants have brought over $1,200,000 in new communication equipment to fire departments in our region. We have also applied for and won the 2013 AFG for $85,500 in new SCBAs for our department, and we were just recently awarded a 2013 Fire Prevention & Safety grant for $32,470.

I would highly recommend that any fire department who is looking to maximize their grant opportunities to consider calling Mr. Bradley. He will give you an honest assessment of your options.

Fire Chief Joel Whitmore, OFE

Northwood Fire Department, Ohio

We are a fire department that has had very little success in obtaining an AFG grants. Several neighboring departments needed to upgrade our communications systems to improve interoperability between each department. Not knowing how to approach this grant request, we quickly realized we needed the services of a professional grant writer.

Kurt Bradley, of First Responder Grants, came highly recommended to us by other fire departments that have used his services. We found Kurt to not only be knowledgeable on the grant process, but he had an excellent understanding of our needs as well. Through his expertise, we were able to develop, apply, and win a 2013 AFG Regional communications grant for $806,690. He provided valuable insight throughout the implementation process to avoid a number of pitfalls we were unaware of.

Fire Chief Jeff Klein, OFE

Perrysburg Fire Department, Ohio

In the past 2 years, the City of Lake Alfred Fire Department has won 2 Assistance to Firefighter Grants with the help of Mr. Bradley.

Our first awarded grant was for new SCBAs. We were awarded $59,850 and were able to purchase 12 SCBA with 16 extra masks and a RIT bag. The second was for a new compressor and fill station for our SCBAs. That award was for $37,430.

Mr. Bradley has been extremely instrumental in our receiving these grants and was there to help us at every turn.

Fire Chief Chris Costine

Lake Alfred Fire Department, Florida

Mr. Bradley,

I would like to first thank you for some amazing training a couple years ago in Kingman, Arizona.

With your help I have succeeded in writing two winning grants. Our SAFER grant garnered our station over $1 million for personnel over a 2-year period. Our 2013 AFG grant just garnered our district $170,000 for 20 SCBA units. We could not have succeeded if it were not for your training.

Jeanne Kentch

Desert Hills Fire District, Arizona

I just wanted to say thank you for all of your help over the years. Today we broke a milestone with grant awards since 2006 in excess of $600,000. We are a small department in a rural community.

Just received an email from FEMA: we will be starting a senior/functional needs Knox Box program here.

This has been a great week here in Edinburg as this is the second grant awarded this week! CSX Transportation awarded us $10,000 for communications upgrades earlier this week. This brings our YTD total to $116,304 and it is only August!

In 2005 the department was awarded $215,000 to replace a tender, so we are well on our way to that million dollar club. Kurt, we could not have done it without you!!

Chief Tim Paulus

Edinburg FD, Ohio

Thank you so much for coming to Montana to present this important training. Even though I drove 375 miles each way, it was easier than flying out of state and messing with car rentals. I am eager to complete the training through your online offering.

Though I have had lots of years of grants writing experience, your information added new tools to my toolbox and fresh ideas for funding sources. It was exemplary in all regards: organization, presentation, and information.

Rest assured that I will recommend it to anyone looking for training in the grants writing/administering arena.

"Just wanted to let you know we are the proud recipients of another AFG award. Thanks for the class in PA, it was great and was able to get us out of our slump. We are looking forward to seeing our new air compressor and cascade system. Again, thanks from your Texas Boys!"

Apr. 4, 2014 — I just wanted to again thank you for putting on the classes you do as I just found the 1199a for fire hose sometime between 13:00 and 14:00 hours today. I had checked a few times before then and there was nothing new.

This will be our third consecutive AFG award to go along with the SAFER and several corporate grants after taking your class a few years ago in Oxford, MI. Again, I am forever grateful for your course because we would not have gotten funded without the information learned.

I am always keeping an eye out for when you are returning to the Michigan area as I would love to take the course again as it appears things will be much more competitive in years to come.

I received your company's email with research tips, and it reminded me to write to you about how helpful your class was to me.

Lyndon Fire & Rescue had been applying for Fire Act grants since 2002, and after being rejected every year till 2006 we decided to seek help. I attended a grant writing training class conducted by Kurt and began using his after-seminar support every year since then. Our results have been outstanding with his assistance and professional guidance:

  • 2007 AFG Award of $102,533 for new SCBA
  • 2007 SAFER – Hiring - $316,275
  • 2010 AFG – Communications upgrade - $51,745
  • 2011 AFG – Washer-Extractor /Drying Cabinet - $18,101
  • 2012 AFG – Hydraulic Rescue tool package - $25,701
  • Total Awards- $514,355

I have attended several of Kurt’s informative and educational classes and found them to be presented in language that was easy to understand. His post-seminar guidance and assistance in helping us with all of our applications has been, to say the least, invaluable. We have invested approximately $5000 with Kurt and his company since 2006, and our return on investment is around 1000:1.

I highly recommend Kurt Bradley and First Responder Grants, Inc. both for their training classes and their services. You simply can’t go wrong.

I am honored to have been mentored by Kurt Bradley. He has inspired me to initiate the grant process for our fire department. Looks like another successful grant for us, to the tune of $7.6 million for staffing. Thank you again, Kurt.

Prior to 2011, our fire company has done all of our grant writing in-house with not much luck. In 2010, we opted to consult a grant writer to help us with this task. After a lot of research and talking to others that had previously used grant writers, Kurt Bradley was the name that kept coming up.

Although I haven't been able to attend one of his seminars, Kurt was very helpful in writing a successful equipment grant for the fire company. He took the time to get to know all the aspects of the fire company so he could help us as much as possible. In 2012, we were awarded nearly $90,000 for some much-needed equipment from the 2011 Assistance to Firefighters Grant.

The department made a small, but excellent and smart investment. We will continue to use Kurt for his expertise for future grants.

I am a retired competitive speech coach/English teacher, and my son, who is a member of our community volunteer fire department, asked me for assistance with grant writing. Our first step was to attend your First Responder Grants workshop, which was a tremendously positive experience.

Kurt did an excellent job of laying out how competitive grant writing has become. He methodically laid out the process of perusing grant literature for information that, if over-looked, will dis-qualify an application. The 2-day presentation was information packed, and there was never a boring moment.

Because the workshop was presented in a "user-friendy" manner, I came home equipped with knowledge that will help me apply for grants with confidence.

I took your grant writing class when it was offered close to home, although I questioned whether it was worth the time or the money, since I was already familiar with grant writing. I have written successful grant applications for some New York State economic development grants, and since I have been involved with the fire service for the last 4 years, 2 of my 3 AFG grant applications have been successful. My record is pretty good. What could I learn?

There were 14 people in the class, and several of them were actually taking the course for the second or third time because they thought there was still more to learn.

By the end of the second day, I agreed with them: the time and money were well spent. I definitely learned more about grant writing, and expect to be more successful as a result of it.

I have no one to thank but YOU! You are the one that gave me the guidance and what was needed to be so successful in being awarded a 2011 Assistance to Firefighters Grant. I have been to Kurt's classes before and they are GREAT! I have had a 70% success rate with all my grants at Burkville FD and helping other departments in Lowndes Co since attending. It has also opened my eyes to other grant opportunities besides just AFG and others through DHS. If you want to see the Trucks, the Turnouts, the SCBAs, the Thermal Imagers, the Hose, the Cascade System that I have been successful with since attending, just let me know I'll be glad to send you pictures of them!

The $2,000 it cost my department to send me to Orlando years ago has more than paid for itself. Seriously consider this class! The small $300 or so it cost your department to send you will be quickly recouped when AFG and other grants open up.

My department sent me and another guy to one of Kurt's seminars in Philadelphia, PA about 3 or 4 years ago. It was the best money our department has ever spent. We had been successful one time through AFG and several small local grant programs before attending this seminar.

Since then we have been doing very well with grants. I would estimate in the last 3 years we are in the $750,000-$1,000,000 dollar club for grants.

Our department is very small and gets very little support from local government and $0.00 from taxes. So grants are our livelihood along with fundraisers. As we all know you can only hold so many Bingo's, breakfasts and ticket raffles before you get burnt out. So we have been lucky, and I would highly recommend going to one of Kurt's seminars.

After years of doing grant writing on my own, I went to one of Kurt Bradley’s conferences and then hired him as a consultant. All I can say is that I could not possibly be happier. It was well worth the time and money spent!

I would highly recommend the combination local writer/ professional consultant & editor approach as Kurt recommends. It results in a good mix of locally specific information, yet still hits the points that the granting agencies are looking for.

I would also like to recommend to anyone looking to hire a consultant/grant writer to look for a Public Safety-specific Grant Writer. We have used local general grant writers in the past. They charge more and just don't understand the Fire Act/ FEMA system.

I can tell you the applications filed since hiring Kurt Bradley are the best ever filed by my agencies. I am looking forward to dealing with Kurt for years to come.

Hazard Fire and Rescue started to pursue grants for our department in the year 2000. Prior to that we had just made do with what we were given.

We attended Kurt’s seminar and have had excellent success since then. We have been awarded 78% of the grants that we applied for.

The seminar presents the information to the students in a format that is easy to comprehend and easy to follow. The instructor emphasizes the points that the reviewers look for in successful grants. The seminar helps to point out a lot of little details that are easily overlooked and may make the difference in getting a grant or getting rejected.

Kurt has answered many emails, and is great to return calls (usually within a few minutes). We feel so confident in this seminar, that we have attended additional seminars and have involved the city police department as well.

The department made an excellent investment in our future by sending a member to this seminar. We invested less than $1,000 dollars, and to this point we have received a total of over $1.9 million dollars in grants altogether. To say the least, we are very happy with our investment. I would encourage any department to take advantage of this excellent training.
