The Law Enforcement Advancing Data and Science Program: A Partnership between NIJ and International Association of Chiefs of Police

Established in 2014 through a partnership between NIJ and the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP), the Law Enforcement Advancing Data and Science (LEADS) program is designed to develop mid-rank law enforcement officers who are committed to advancing and integrating science into law enforcement policies and practice. To accomplish this, merit-based scholarships are competitively awarded to mid-rank officers (sergeants, lieutenants, captains, etc.) who have effectively infused research into policy development within their agencies.

What this grant does for your agency

Agencies awarded the Scholarships to Attend the IACP 2016 Conference receive a scholarship that includes:

  • Attendance at the IACP Conference
  • Participation in private workshops with NIJ, OJP and IACP leadership
  • Numerous networking activities between the current and incoming classes of scholars
  • An opportunity to network with, and learn from, like-minded officers working towards the common goal of improving law enforcement throughout the nation

Only a limited number of scholarships will be awarded.

Grant Eligibility

This scholarship program is for sworn, mid-level career police professionals who have demonstrated experience partnering with researchers to implement science-based initiatives, or who have infused research into policing policy and practice. Applicants should be officers who are in a position to affect policy and practice within their agencies. Applicants must:

  • Not currently be an NIJ grantee
  • Be a sworn law enforcement officer working for a United States law enforcement agency
  • Hold a position that is considered “mid-rank” within their respective agency
